OUR CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC
Until a few days ago, no American had ever witnessed the spectacle of blue lights flashing and agents armed with machine guns executing a search warrant on the home of a former President. It is an image we will never forget. Donald Trump’s enemies are celebrating, but his supporters are enraged.
Those who accuse former President Trump of being leader of a fascist movement, rejoiced that perhaps he was finally being knocked off his pedestal. Those who know him to be a defender of freedom, see a small army invading his home as a warning to all patriots that we are in the crosshairs of the deep state.
This issue is much bigger than any one person. We are in a cold civil war between two clashing perspectives of America’s past and two warring visions for her future. The Left views us as an illegitimate country. We stole the land from natives. We built the country on slavery. We enriched ourselves through imperialist exploitation. We are a racist, sexist, xenophobic, Islamophobic, homophobic and transphobic nation, consumed by fear and hatred of the other. We are the archetype of injustice.
Those of us who love this country see America as an exceptional nation. We were built on the courage and sacrifice of those who preceded us. The pioneering spirit which settled this nation began with faith. The pilgrims and puritans braved a dangerous ocean voyage in the quest for freedom and the right to worship God according to the dictates of their conscience.
Through violent waves, hostile wilderness, harsh weather, dangerous animals and unpredictable natives, New World settlers envisioned a shining city on a hill. The world the Founding Fathers inherited was filled with barbarism, conquest and slavery. Yet they rose above it to establish our country on freedom, faith, sacrifice, inventiveness and hard work. From around the world people were drawn here or - in the case of my African ancestors - stayed here for freedom and the dream of a better life.
Out of that dream we all inherited a Constitutional Republic which is the wonder of the world. There has never been any government like it. Our Constitution has endured for a quarter of a millennium. It divided power into three co-equal branches of government so that no one branch or leader could wield unchecked authority. It set forth limited and enumerated federal powers and in the Tenth Amendment left all other powers to the states and the people.
The Left calls the January 6th protest an “insurrection” because they do not understand the resilience of our system of government. Protesters entered the Capital building, but that represents only one branch of the three. They would still have to contend with an independent judiciary and an executive branch with military and law enforcement resources. The unfortunate events of that day delayed the certification of the electoral college vote for a few hours. Even though it was disruptive, the motive was to uphold our system, not overthrow it. That hardly constitutes a threat to our Republic.
The real threat is not what happened in Washington D.C. on January 6, but what happened at Mara Lago on August 8. Using the FBI in a dawn raid on the home of a former President and presumptive future candidate did severe damage to our justice system. The Magistrate who issued the warrant is demonstrably anti-Trump. The 2020 elections had already caused longterm distrust of our electoral process. If we lose faith both in our courts and our elections, there will be no institutions to which we can turn for the peaceful resolution of our deepening cultural and political divide.
The Democrat Party and their leftist allies portray Donald Trump as a grave threat to “our democracy.” They do not acknowledge that our Founders intentionally designed a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy. What Leftists really mean by “our democracy” is that they want their way, and they will not be deterred by Trump, the Constitution or the people. They believe that in the name of instituting their utopia of social justice they can do whatever they want to whomever they want. The COVID pandemic revealed their insatiable hunger for power and control over the lives of others.
Our Constitution guarantees freedom of speech to people saying things we do not like. Freedom of religion is guaranteed for people who practice their faith in ways we do not approve. The Fourth Amendment guarantees protection “against unreasonable searches and seizures” for those we see as enemies. Under our system of government, Donald Trump and his supporters are not excluded from constitutional protection, no matter how much the Democrat Party might wish it in their “democracy.”
The American people must be sober-minded, but we should not ignore the fact that under the Biden administration the IRS recently purchased $700,000 worth of ammunition, has stockpiled nearly 5000 weapons and is about to add 87,000 agents to their ranks. The deep state is after Donald Trump today, but “we the people” will be their target tomorrow. On November 8, 2022 we must defend our liberty at the ballot box by electing a Congress committed to preserving our Constitutional Republic.
